I am conflicted! On the one hand you played 3 Experts and beat 2 out of 3!! On the other hand, it was Game in 30 minutes! Perhaps you could post all 3 games. But if your rating got all the way to over 2000, I think that means something, so again, congaratulations!!

ReplyDeleteI figured you would make Expert, and not primarily based on you were many times close to it, but because you seem to play at a club where there are a ton of Experts compared to many other clubs in the USA where 1800 is like top-dog. There's nothing too magical about most 1900 and Experts, they simply blunder less. Some will be good at endgames, but either way it's difficult to improve endgames at G/30 unless someone shoots straight for an ending and spends most of their clock time there, and many of them do do that!
I am confused. You show the game you lost! That's fine, but we want to see how you beat the 2 Experts! Did you play well, or did they just hang pieces?
ReplyDeleteNice win! 16.Re1. He either missed 16.Qd2 or missed that it's possible, that it works (against both ...Nf5, and ...Rd8).
ReplyDeleteThe only funny thing about this win putting you into Expert category is that you were in a quad with three Experts at G/30, d/5. You were the only one that wasn't an Expert. That strikes me as all upside as long as you can move fast, which I seem to recall you could, even though you seemed more of a time-pressure addict like myself.
Wait, I'm confused again! Did you actually win the game above? Did White resign in that position after moving? Annotations would be nice! Actually after move 25...Qc6 the game still seemed pretty close but we of course don't know how much time you each had left. I'm guessing you were both under 30 minutes!

Thanks for the comments. Since hitting 2000, I have experimented with many different openings, so that I can familiarize my self with different structures. In the short run my rating has taken a hit, but I think that it will pay off in the long run.

ReplyDeleteI'm currently playing in a one-game-a-week tournament. All A & B players. I just won again on Thursday to bring me to 4-0, 3 of those were against 1800 players. 2 rounds to go.
After this tournament, I'm not sure what's next. I'd like to play in class tournaments only, but there aren't any available.

Tactics? Time trouble? Endings? Too many underrated juniors?

I think it's a combination of all the following:
- Once I hit 2000, I decided to experiment with new openings so that that I could get familiar with new structures. I knew that in the short run my rating would suffer, but in the long run it should make me a better player. But I didn't expect to lose that many points.
- I got lazy and stopped studying. I love to play and did just that.
- I am getting "old"
- I have not been working out regularly. My fitness level is not as good as it used to be.
That being said I have $1000.00 bet with my wife. I will lose that bet if I don't get back up to 2000 by 2/18/19
Are you based in Madison?
I plan to play in the US Open
