Kings Island Open : Nov 11-12 (Mason, OH)

I only played one good game (round 4), but still lost only 2 rating points to finish with 1-1=2 with a rating of 1872.

Round 2 - Me vs MICHAEL A MORRIS (1944) Loss
In this game I could have forced the following position (on move 16) with Black to play:

I thought that the isolated pawn would be a liability, but I think that my active pieces compensate for this and White should be fine. I lost this game because of the move 17. Nh7, for a moment I forgot that rooks can move horizontally too!

Round 3 - KEVIN MALLOY (1914) vs me Draw
I could have played Kh7 and there are no more checks and Black shold be able to win with the extra piece.

Round 4 Me vs - MICHAEL CHIANG (1856 ) Win

Round 5 GEORGE J ELGIN (1771) vs Me Draw

This was a very interesting but frustrating draw. I was clearly winning for most of the game, and then I got into a winning pawn endgame (43...e5). I then blundered with 51...Kg2 and should have lost, but my opponent captured the wrong pawn and the game was drawn. 60. K x b5 wins while K x b4 draws. So instead of gaining about 12 rating points I lost a couple.

  1. Interesting games - thanks. In G4 in particular, seems to me that Black played quite passively. Did you look at either 14 d5 or 16 d5 to mount pressure on e6?

An observation about taking the B on d6 - from a pawn structure perspective, it evens things up for Black. Another plan - even earlier in the game - might have been to use your Rooks on the half-open c file. Nice finish on the K-side.

  5. Hi Ivan,

I like your game 4 against Michael Chiang and especially how your locked out his white bishop. I agree with the first comment that it looks like he played passively. Good game.

  6. Is there a way to swap the board displays to always play through the games from Ivan's point of view?

  7. In R5, did you consider playing Ke7 rather than castling? That would have left your K much closer to the action.

  8. Although I knew better I was not disciplined enough not to get over confident in this game. I was so sure that I was going to win, that I was in auto pilot mode. I read some where that the bigger your advantage the more you have to lose. I forgot that during this game.

I spent about 20 minutes on my 43…e5 just to make sure that I was winning in all variations. If White went after my q-side pawns he would lose by a tempo, I didn’t spend too much time looking at him going to the k-side since I had 2 reserve tempi with my b7 pawn.

My evaluation was correct, but I made the horrible blunder 51…kg2 with 50…g5 it was an easy win.

There is no way to flip the board.

  9. 60. Kxb4 is the most obvious blunder of all.
    60. Kxb5 Kc3 61. Ka4 and black loses.
