I went 3-2=0 in the U1900 section. The losses were hard to take as they were both in great positions, complicated by time trouble. I have to work on better time management!
It's ironic but my best games were my losses. Here is a position from my 3rd round loss to Daniel, who tied for first.

This is the a position from the last round, where a win would have won $267
I played f4, which is still winning, but Nf5 is much stronger

Four of us made the trip. Derek Paitrick had a great event in the U2100 section winning $320 and becoming Wisconsin's newest expert. Paul Fricano had a sub par effort in the Open Section with 1-4=0, but had winning positions in his first two losses, including one against GM Anatoly Lein. Ryan Jayne went 3-1=1, and won $18 in the U1700 section.
Derek Paitrick during his last round draw. (He has a notebook with pencil)We went to eat around 1am on Friday and ran in to the top two seeds GM Darmen Sadvakasov 2638 (and girlfriend) and GM Alexander Shabalov 2632
Last round action.
Front: IM Bryan G Smith(Right) upset GM Darmen Sadvakasov
Back: GM Alexander Shabalov(Right) beat IM Kirill Kuderinov.
Congratulations to Derek !
ReplyDeleteIvan, thanks for the news & photos.

ReplyDeleteIf you want to gain rating points and your rated like 1840 or whatever then you should enter the u2100 section at kings island. Entering the u1900 section meant you were just playing for money not rating points.
Play with the sharks !
Jon
But I should be able to beat the U1900 people before I can attempt to beat the U2100?
ReplyDeleteNot day in and day out Ivan. Whoever is trying to improve should play one class up: as Paul does for instance. Good luck in 2009!
ReplyDeleteQuick Chess flier is on www.wichessacademy.com Also, US Amateur Team flier with Blitz side event is posted.
Alex
I agree with Alex always play a class up Ivan. As for things you looked at after the game like the move Nc6 did you find that move using a computer Ivan ? analyzing your game with Rybka or fritz ?
ReplyDeleteJon
Playing up is the right decision. The fact is, if you want to improve, you actually HAVE to play against stronger players.
ReplyDeleteNo we found Nc6 without computers, The move I played, Ba6 is winning too, but not as crushing as Nc6. Infact I was looking at Nc6 earlier if White had played Kc1 (after I played Qa4).
ReplyDeleteThat Nc6 move is a killer. Too bad you didn't see it at the time.
ReplyDeleteI agree with other posters that with your rating in mid 1800s better to play up. Unless you're planning to kiss ass and win all the money. If it's an under 2000 section and the next section up is Open or Under 2200 then you might consider staying in your own section.
Just go for the Money!
ReplyDeleteYou should go to the NA Open, I think you will do well there!
ReplyDeleteRule of thumb: if you're in the lower half of the rating bracket, go in your own section. If you're in the upper half, play up.
ReplyDeleteI just read that chessloser has shut it down. I'm a class C player, and I hope you continue working towards your goal as it gives me hope that I could accomplish the same goal. What does your latest training regimen consist of? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by.
ReplyDeleteI started a chess club at my son's school: TSHST Chess Team, so I have less time to train.
My training consists of:
Chess Tactics Server
Doing other Tactics puzzles
Reading : Rook endings, Opening Books
Playing : G/90 or slower games
Blitz games : used for opening preparation
Great, be sure to come on December 14th to Madison for QUICK chess: use it as opening preparation!
ReplyDeleteAlex
You mean the 13th?
ReplyDeleteAre you using regualar or quick rating?
ReplyDeleteIt says 8 +3 Sec. Is this delay or increment?
Jason J.
Regular ratings are used. Delay, no increment!
