I finished with 3-0=3 (Not so good since I was paired down in every game.)

  1. Draw vs Mark Marshall (1599) In a clearly drawn position I tried too hard and was losing, but managed to draw.
  2. Win vs Richard Herrington (1440)
  3. Draw vs Victoria Zhang(1726) I got to a rook and pawn ending, up a pawn with very good winning chances, but only manged a draw.
  4. Win vs Suchinder Kalyan(1696)
  5. Win vs Alfredo Garcia(1663)
  6. Draw vs James Ukoli (1860)
  7. Bye

Since I had a last round bye I had to win my 6th round game to finish in the money. I reached the following position as Black with White to play and agreed to a draw since I was in a little bit of time trouble. But I should have played to the bitter end à la Nakamura. I gained one rating point to end up at 1889.

10/1/2009 Update : I was pleasantly surprised to receive a check for $31.00 , I did finish in the money!

  2. Ivan: Good luck in the tournament. We here in Wisconsin are gearing up for the State Championship over Labor Day weekend.

  6. A quick glance at the position seem to indicate to me that it is about equal. It seems like it would be hard for black to win this with the doubled pawns. However, there is still a lot of play left in the position. Black could possibly create an outside passed pawn. It would have been an interesting position to play out. Of course, if one was low on time, it is wise to grab the draw.

  7. Playing a steady diet of lower-rated bites almost as hard as not using a person's FIDE rating. Well, at least you got to play and uphold your rating. :-)

I guess it depends on how little time you had left. ...Nd2 Rd1 ...Ne4 Ng3 ...c5, then ...Rb2 and ...Bd6. Not sure what that does, but it might scare the opponent, if you found it quickly. hehe.

  8. Man, may as well play in the Open section next time. Your opponents, looks like a steady stream of lower-class rated opponents, throw in an A player, and a "ringer" that you never got to play. What a rip, so sad it's funny.

  9. I am outraged now that I've found out about Phung. Out of country players should not be able to take advantage of deflated USCF ratings.

That's one of the reasons I don't play in Brownsville btw.

  10. I didn't know there were opportunities to play in Brownsville?

  11. If a person is not a US Citizen, then the FIDE rating should control. It is almost like sandbagging.

  12. Ivan, I noticed you said on US Chess Online in the article blog that if it was a CCA tournament he would not be able to play in an U2000 section. How do you explain him being able to play in an U1700 section in a CCA event in December 2008 when he still had a Fide rating?

  13. I stand corrected, I thought that CCA had restrictions.

    There should be restrictions.

  14. PHUNG N NGUYEN is a SANBAGGER!

  15. Ivan,

it's embarrassing that you are counting single rating points well short of the 1900 mark, when you started out on a quest to 2000 over 3 years ago...

    take up your quest again.

BTW, the Yussupow book 'Build up Your chess 3" may be for you...

  19. And now Phung has *miraculously* recovered from his bad tourny to come within one round of winning the Lone Star Open in a tough field.

I'm sure $$$ has nothing to do with it.

  20. Its sad to see someone "playing" the system like that. I'm sure something will eventually be said about his fraudulent behavior.
