  1. I've never understood FIDE ratings norms. Are you aware of anything written about how they work?

Floor now is 1000 actually :)

More correctly you do need a total of 9 games against FIDE rated players however there are catches here.

First if we are talking about a Swiss tournament, you need to score 1 point or more against a minimum of 3 FIDE rated players to achieve a 'rating norm'. This can be a win or 2 draws. If you do them in clumps of 3 (which is pretty normal) then you'll have to get 3 of them within an 18 month period.

Now effective 01.July.2011 after you score your first 3+ game 'rating norm', then you can go ahead and play a single game against a FIDE rated player and have that count towards your 9 game requirement. So it will make it easier to achieve an established FIDE rating.

The other way, which is what I used for this event, was the RR method, where you have a 9R-RR, minimum of 4 players with a FIDE rating, and the other 6 without. So long as the non-FIDE rated players score 1 point or more (single win or 2 draws) against ANYONE in the field, then all of the non-FIDE rated players will get an established rating. You have to take into account their actual playing strength to give reasonable chances so make sure that their USCF ratings are comparable. You also have to take into account the rating of the 4 FIDE rated players to ensure that the time control used for the event is allowed under FIDE regulations. I kept the FIDE rated players under 2200 so I could use a time control of G/60 + 30/sec increment to provide the minimum of 90 minutes of think time as required.

    Hello Sevan,

Can you please explain the the 2nd paragraph below.

After 3 rounds I have played 3 FIDE players so I already have a FIDE norm
    1. Loss Feinstein, Michael 2261
    2. Win Pamatmat, Jordan James 1702
    3. Win Li, Zhichao 2176

Lets say I play 2 more FIDE players in rounds 4 & 5 then if I play another FIDE player in my next event and score at least a point, I get a 2nd FIDE norm?

If you play 2 more players in rounds 4 and 5, then you will have a 5-game rating norm.

After this 5th round (let's assume that's the end of the tournament), then you will only need 4 more games (a single 4-game rating norm or 2, 3-game rating norms).

Games played in a single tournament under the current rules get compiled together and you get a rating norm from it.

Under the new rules that will be effective July 1, 2011 (the second paragraph) you can gain FIDE rated games (after scoring the first 3 or more game rating norm) one at a time.

So in your example above, after you get the 5-game rating norm, you can pick up 4 individual FIDE rated games here and there.

It's to make gaining a FIDE rating easier. But this new rule isn't in effect until the July 1, 2011.

  3. Congrats on getting your first rating norm Ivan! I got my last norm in Stillwater a few years ago, you might want to check one of those out. I think the Berrys still hold four FIDE-rated swiss tournaments a year.

  4. Thanks

I am looking into playing the Jerry Hanken FIDE Winter Open, but since I now live in Corpus Christi, it's a long hike

  5. Question: I recently played in a swiss tournament of 6 rounds where I played 2 established FIDE players and obtained 1 pt and one player who had one FIDE rating norm (not yet established) and other 3 who have FIDE id but no rating norms. So does this tournament count towards a norm for me?
    Thanks

  6. I don't think so
After july think the rules change, where u can get to nine games 1 game at a time.

  7. I just got my first rating norm from 3 games. I had 1 point out of 3 against 3 fide established players. I have a Rp of 2024. http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=2047802

    1. So I believe I can now add up to the required 9 games one by one ?
    2. How many points should I score in the remaining 6 games (assuming I am going to accumulate one by one) to complete my full quote of 9 games? or may be it does not matter.

  8. I don't think your score will matter. Obviously you want to score well to get good rating.

    You stared well!

I finally got my FIDE rating of 1982
