Progress Report etc.

I have been able to devote so much time to playing chess for the last few months because my family has been out of state. They will be returning Jan 1 so after, that I won't have too much time to go to tournaments. Although, I will be able to study, which is what I really need in order to improve. I will be traveling to and from Texas over the Christmas/New Year's break. I will be flying down and driving back.

My goal is to get to 2000 by the February 2007 supplement. There are only three weekends left. (I don't think the Jan 6-7 weekend will make the February supplement)

These are some of the tournaments I am looking at playing in:

Observations etc.
  • I attribute my imrovement mainly to my mental attitude. I used to be "scared" of my opponents. Not any more. Swiching(from the Qd6 Scandinavian) back to Caro Kann helped too.
  • Most of my recent losses/draws were due to mistakes during time trouble, I have to improve in that department.
  • I see a lot more tactics now, but I still miss a lot.

  1. Quite honestly, Ivan, a rating gain of 89 points is nothing to be ashamed of, even if you don't quite achieve your goal in the time frame you laid out. Of course, there is always improvement that can be made, but your gain in playing strength has been a motivating example for me.

  2. Ivan- The title "Western Michigan Open" is a bit decieving, in regards to size, the last 3 "Western Michigan Opens" drew between 8-16 players. Its a monthly local event. Check it out on the MSA.

12/24 Touch Moves G/30. I havent been yet, but am told the attendees so far have been strong experts and masters only where you may get pressured for some money games. 12/30 they have a game 60... much better for you I assume than the 30 minute control. Im told all of these events are supposed to be USCF rated but I have yet to see any listed by this affliate.

Good luck with your holiday chess ventures.

If you can get out of the house after the new year 1-6/7 Tim Just Winter Open and 1-20/21 Neenah.
